Across its history jewellery has often been more than ornamental. Jewels are personal and have a symbolic meaning for the wearer based on the myths and rituals of their society. Often given on special occasions they marked important events in life from cradle to grave, they have been worn as symbols of faith, protective amulets, as well as a sign of authority and distinction.
This course reveals the traditions and meaning behind Western jewellery from late Antiquity to the present day and the significance of individual items to the wearer.
