There are 1.2 million species recorded as existing on our planet, but the total number may be 10 or even 100 times that. The idea of the intrepid explorer going into the unknown in pursuit of natural history conjures up romantic images of khaki and pith hats, but what is life like for the 21st-century field scientist?
Join us for lunchtime talk from Erica McAlister, Collections Manager for Flies, Fleas, Arachnida and Myri, Natural History Museum. Erica looks after a collection of 3-4 million specimens at the Natural History Museum, where she not only curates the collection, but is actively engaged in adding to it through fieldwork across the world.
Hear her tales of discovery and adventure, as she goes out into the field, identifying species of flies new to science.
