Alvorada is a London-based group who play Brazilian Choro music of all styles, including lesser-known works and original compositions. Choro emerged in Rio in the late 19th century as a mixture of European harmony with African rhythm and improvisation, in a similar way to jazz and ragtime.
The word 'choro' comes from the Portuguese verb 'chorar', which means 'to cry'. Indeed, Choro music certainly has its fair share of tear-inducing laments. But Choro is mostly known for its lively, playful and syncopated melodies in the traditional setting of a 'roda'; that is, with musicians playing informally around the table (drinking plenty of beer — provided by the loving fans, of course!).
Alvorada play a wide variety of styles of choro, exploring influences from all over Brazil (and London). We play choros with the irrisistable swing of samba from the South and baião from the Northeast, and even in the style of frevo, a Carnival dance from the Northeast! Many of the Choros we play are our own compositions, so you may find a Cockney twist to them…
Alvorada have the traditional instrumentation of the 'regional' choro ensemble:
Andrew Woolf — clarinet
Rachel Hayter — flute
Luiz Morais — 7 string guitar
Jeremy Shaverin — cavaquinho
Alua Nascimento — pandeiro
THE NORFOLK BROADS
«Young female quartet the Norfolk Broads are strong storytellers...Their close harmonies brought a witty feminist take to a well-curated set of tales of impotence, greedy landlords, and the joys of a single life.» ~ The Guardian
The Tailor Birds sound is returning to Europe with the 'Stilts on the Water' tour, their 5th tour in as many years, set to thrill their audiences, both old and new.
Sophie Kinston, front woman, electric violinist and creative force behind the Tailor Birds sound, will be performing through Holland, Ireland, Italy and the UK this summer, with a run of festivals, gigs, spoken word events, and unique street shows. Launching the preview of new record, White Feather, with pre-sales starting up, this tour will feature some special local guests along the way.
Weaving through classical, experimental and folk inspirations, Tailor Birds' builds an audience that is as diverse as much as it is one, telling tales about love, loss, hopes, dreams, that anything is possible. Connecting their people to something good again, in a world that is constantly changing, this is music to inspire, ignite the spirit, and challenge our inner most desires. With both solo and larger shows planned for this summer, this is world folk at its' finest, and music at its' most raw.
A late addition to the bill, Wild Anima will play a set of her ambient electronica to open proceedings from about 7pm.
