For the ultimate feel-good Saturday afternoon, Yoke is launching a monthly yoga book club with yoga teacher and literary agent, Rachel Mills. It will involve an hour of gentle vinyasa flow to relax us and forget our to-do lists and daily stress, followed by sitting down to discuss a good book. Each month we’ll choose a book we love or suggestions from you that we think it would be fun to talk about. It’s not an English exam – if you haven’t finished (or even started!) it – no problem! We thought it would be a nice way to get to know our fellow yogis a bit better. Like yoga, books teach us about ourselves and the world around us, and can transport us to places we never imagined. Why not share that?
Our first book for July is Tove Jansson’s The Summer Book. It’s one of those books that stays with you long after reading – it’s wise, magical and full of joy. Tove Jansson is famous as the author of the much-loved Moomins children’s books, and if you liked them when you were younger you might recognise some of her love of landscape and magic. It’s a short, special book – very cheap on a certain bookselling website, and available on Kindle. You can order a copy of The Summer Book from our local bookshop, Burley Fisher Books on Kingsland Rd burleyfisherbooks.com
In her dual career as a literary agent and yoga teacher, Rachel Mills is passionate about sharing how yoga can aid concentration and imagination, teach you to really sit comfortably, relax and clear your mind — not to mention stretch out those rounded bookworm spines. Absolutely no yoga experience (or an English Literature degree) required. Mats, props provided.
