2 performances at the SOUTHBANK CENTRE, 29 & 30 July — Dive into the hyper-sexualised physical language of the music video with Holly Blakey, best known for her work with Florence and the Machine.

Set in a modern day Garden of Eden, Blakey addresses ideas of connectivity, gender and class in this work, and as dancers writhe and contract, their movements lay bare the subtle and not-so-subtle dynamics of contemporary pop culture.

Created in collaboration with musicians Gwilym Gold and Darkstar, who perform the score live, Some Greater Class inscribes the process of viewing and being viewed on the performers’ bodies, delicately commenting on the normative ideals promoted in mainstream pop culture.

From explosive energy to vulnerability and transgression, the dancers’ search for connection offers a potent reminder of the radical potential of live performance.

— First developed and presented in 2016 with the support of Arts Council England, and in collaboration with Hales Gallery, Shoreditch. The show was inspired by Blakey’s work as a music video director, choreographer and artist

and her drive to break out of the categories enforced upon her by both the art world and the commercial world. The show takes a fresh look at how pop culture and art are consumed, drawing upon Blakey’s unique perspective as both a creator of, and a commentator upon popular culture. Some Greater Class has also been presented at the Michel Berger Music festival in Berlin and as part of the launch of Marguerite in London.
