PRS Foundation and the Steve Reid Foundation will host the highly anticipated second edition of the STEVE REID INNOVATION SHOWCASE featuring performances from the recent awardees, Nubya Garcia, Ola Szmidt and The Little Unsaid and DJ set from Femi Koleoso at Total Refreshment Centre on Tuesday 12 September 2017.

Doors open at 7pm and tickets for the event are available now and priced at £5 from Dice FM. The showcase is open to anyone aged 16 and over.

The STEVE REID INNOVATION AWARD has unearthed and nurtured artists such as Moses Boyd, Sarathy Korwar, Lady Vendredi and Hector Plimmer, with bursary support and mentoring from Steve Reid Foundation trustees such as Gilles Peterson, Four Tet, Floating Points, Charlie Dark and Emanative.

This year’s Awardees are:

Nubya Garcia
London-based saxophonist and composer, Nubya Garcia, is one of the leading forces behind the resurgence of jazz-influenced sounds in the UK. Raised in a creative environment built by a set of Caribbean parents, her brand of afro-tinged jazz has made her a key component in a string of new and established groups: from work with legendary jungle producer and toaster, Congo Natty, through to her own works as part of the Theon Cross Trio, six-piece Maisha, and the Nérija septet. Spring 2017 saw her release her first solo project via forward-thinking imprint, Jazz re:freshed. The project — which explores the common ground between progressive jazz, hip hop and soulful, groove led rhythms — is helping to cement her credentials in UK music.

Ola Szmidt
Ola Szmidt is a singer-songwriter, musician, flautist and producer based in York. As a multi-faceted musician her work combines vocal and instrumental improvisations with live looping techniques, and self-produced electronics with sound art and songwriting. Ola’s music shifts between Scandinavian and Eastern Folk traditions, whilst including Soul, Jazz, Contemporary Classical and Ambient practices. She writes and sings in both English and her mother tongue, Polish. Ola studied Jazz Improvisation with legendary free jazz improvisers Keith and Julie Tippett and is a featured artist with the Emmy Award Winning company hitRECord, as an ongoing contributor and collaborator.

The Little Unsaid
The Little Unsaid have spent the last year travelling the UK and Europe, leaving audiences emotionally rapt with a live show that’s been described as ‘a thumping depth of passion, recalling the intensity and melancholic overtones of Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen.’ Led by Yorkshire-born songwriter and multi-instrumentalist John Elliott, the band have just completed their forthcoming album, Imagined Hymns & Chaingang Mantras, recorded with Radiohead engineer and acclaimed film score producer Graeme Stewart. Stewart’s touch lends a sweeping, cinematic quality to the album’s ten deeply personal songs, written during Elliott’s recovery from post-traumatic stress disorder after a year of ongoing personal trauma brought his life and music career to a standstill.

Femi Koleoso
Femi Koleoso began his musical journey at the age of 3 playing the drums at church. At 11, Femi met with jazz drummer Tim Giles for weekly lessons who broadened and inspired his musical taste, then meeting Gary Crosby OBE, seeing his potential and drive who pushed him further into the direction he is in now. Since then he has become bandleader of award winning band Ezra Collective whilst becoming MD for internationally acclaimed rapper Pharoahe Monch, also playing with former Art Blakey messenger Jean Toussaint and many other names in Jazz, Hip Hop and Afrobeat.

The sound system is kindly provided by the amazing EPA Sound.
They do some of the best sounding PAs out there, if you've been to TRC in the last 3 months then you'll know what we're talking about.
