“Audacious… bravura… magnificent… beneath the film’s placid surface lie themes of class, patriarchy, mortality, evolution and the cosmic scheme of things” — Seattle International Film Festival

Thai director Anocha Suwichakornpong's ethereal first film has been widely praised as one of the most startling and original feature debuts of recent years. This seemingly ordinary, astutely structured family drama is a film with cosmic aspirations.

The story of a paralyzed son, his elusive father, and the male nurse hired to take care of the wheelchair-bound patient parallels the emotional dynamic of a single home with the tumult of an entire country. Like its dichotomic title, the film gradually expands outwards to morph into a philosophical and hallucinogenic meditation about our place in the universe. A film as beautiful, strange and as mysterious as life itself.

We showed Suwichakornpong's second film By the Time it Gets Dark earlier this year to a sold out cinema, and wanted to give people a chance to catch up with her critically acclaimed first feature as part of the Scalarama festival.

Deptford Cinema is proud to be taking part in Scalarama. This annual celebration sees September transform into a month of amazing films, screened in various locations and by all different types of people – from established picture palaces to newbies, completely new to screening films. Scalarama is by everyone, for everyone, everywhere, with DIY in its veins.
