Victorian patent medicines such as Clarke's World-Famed Blood Mixture offered to remove 'impurities' from the body. In this talk, illustrated with a wealth of 19th-century advertising images, Caroline Rance explores why such remedies were so popular – and why some people viewed them as quackery.
Caroline Rance is a writer and editor living in the UK. She has an MA in Medicine, Science and Society: Historical and Theoretical Perspectives, and she is the author of the bestselling books The History of Medicine in 100 Facts and What the Apothecary Ordered: Questionable Cures Through the Ages.
Doors will open at 6:30pm.
This is the first of four talks for «Our Blood Lecture Series» that will take place this Autumn 2017.
*Access: The museum is only accessible through a 52-step spiral staircase for the moment.
