Explore modern-day New York through the eyes of artist Jason Brooks and discuss the importance of keeping a sketchbook in the 21st century.

Brooks is perhaps best known for his fashion illustrations, and work with numerous luxury brands, but he has always been fascinated by cities. New York Sketchbook is the latest instalment in a series of travel journals written and illustrated by the artist. Against a backdrop of iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty as well as smaller, out-of-the-way sights, New York Sketchbook celebrates the most vibrant city on earth and depicts the day-to-day lives of native New Yorkers from diner to doorstep. Travel has been a recurrent theme in Jason Brooks’ work and continues to inspire and broaden his visual repertoire. Learn about Brooks’ adventure when documenting the textures and tones of ‘the Capital of the World’ as well as the variety of media and techniques he uses. This is a rare opportunity to discuss the importance of sketching in the modern age and how illustration can capture life and fashion in the metropolis.

Jason Brooks studied Illustration at St Martin’s and The Royal College of Art, where he began working regularly for British Vogue after winning the Vogue Sotheby’s Cecil Beaton Award for Fashion Illustration. He has made live fashion drawing reports from fashion weeks in London, New York and the Paris Couture for The Independent, Elle and Visionaire. His artwork also provided the visual identity for the record label Hedkandi selling over 6 million albums. In 2016 his second book, London Sketchbook, won the Book Illustration Award from London’s V&A Museum, who also hold over 70 of his drawings, paintings and prints in their permanent archive.

The event starts at 6pm with a glass of wine in the Museum foyer and opportunity to view the current exhibition Louise Dahl-Wolfe – A Style of Her Own. The talk follows at 6.15pm for 6.20pm in the Fashion Studio and lasts for approximately one hour including an opportunity to ask questions. It is followed by a book signing. Ticket includes admission to the exhibition and guests are welcome to view this before or after the talk.

Price £15 / £12 students includes a complimentary drink and exhibition entry.
Numbers are limited for this event, please book early to avoid disappointment.
