The event will start off with Thurston Moore (Guitar) and Terry Day (Drums) playing as a duo. It will be followed by the John Butcher (Saxophone), John Edwards (Double Bass) and Steve Beresford (Piano) trio, before all five musicians end the night playing as a quintet for the first time.
John Butcher's work ranges through improvisation, his own compositions, multitracked pieces and explorations with feedback, unusual acoustics and non-concert locations. He is well known as a solo performer who attempts to engage with the uniqueness of place. His first solo album, Thirteen Friendly Numbers, includes compositions for multitracked saxophones, whilst later solo CDs focus on live performance, composition, amplification and saxophone-controlled feedback.
Terry Day is a multi-instrumentalist, improvisation pioneer, song writer, tune-smith, lyricist, poet, painter and a conductor. He began Improvising on the drums in a drum duet with his brother Pat in 1955, and in 1960 formed an improvising trio of Piano, bass & drums. Since 2000 Day has performed regularly with the London Improvisers Orchestra (LIO) playing bamboo reed flutes, sopranino, recorders, balloons, drums, & simultaneously conducting & reciting lyrics, prose, verse with the LIO. He has also performed recitation conductions with the Malaga, Tokyo, & Madrid Improvising Orchestras.
Steve Beresford has been a central figure in the British improvising scene for over thirty years, working with the likes of Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Han Bennink, Christian Marclay and, of course, Alterations. His work with Marclay has included mixed media pieces like 'Screen Play', 'Ephemera', 'Graffiti Composition', 'Shuffle', 'Pianorama' and 'Everyday'. He has also written songs, scored feature films, TV shows and commercials. Beresford has an extensive discography as performer, arranger, composer and producer, and was awarded a Paul Hamlyn award for composers in 2012.
Thurston Moore is an American musician best known as a singer, songwriter and guitarist of Sonic Youth. He has also participated in many solo and group collaborations outside Sonic Youth, as well as running the Ecstatic Peace! record label. Moore was ranked 34th in Rolling Stone's 2004 edition of the «100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.» In 2012, he started a new band Chelsea Light Moving, with their first track, «Burroughs», released as a free download. Chelsea Light Moving's eponymous debut was released on March 5, 2013.
Since 1995 John Edwards has become a «mainstay» of the London scene, playing with just about everybody, an activity that has seen him clocking up between 150 and 200 gigs a year. He has become regular player with Evan Parker, in many groupings, and with Tony Bevan, Veryan Weston, and Elton Dean, often in collaboration with Mark Sanders on percussion. He has become a more frequent player on the European (and festival) scene, appearing at Taktlos, Ulrichsburg, Nickelsdorf, Budapest, New Zealand and in the USA. He continues to work on solo performances.
