~~~ DJ KATAPILA ~~~
DJ Katapila makes Ga traditional music using electronic sounds instead of live percussion to create his own kind of what he calls house music. Born Ishmael Abbey in Accra, Ghana, his long career as a DJ traveling the country top to bottom set the stage for a late-in-life explosion of production activity.
Beginning with the release of a single and then the 2009 full length Trotro, the DJ & producer has managed to make his sound ubiquitous in Ghana and other parts of West Africa in piracy-driven anonymity. Awesome Tapes From Africa re-released Trotro in 2016 to critical acclaim from publications worldwide including the New York Times, Fact, Tiny Mix Tapes, Vice’s Thump, the 405 and Vinyl Factory, which calls it “Elastic dance music at its most raw.”
In the context of Ghana’s pop music landscape, Katapila’s music is singular. The uptempo, bass-heavy, Roland 808-rooted sounds echo early 1990’s Detroit techno and Chicago acid house more than the contemporary hiplife productions blasting across Ghanaian airwaves currently. However, the structure of Katapila’s sound directly descends from Ga musical lineage found around Accra. The music contains remnants of the neo-traditional dance music forms gome, kpanlogo and gyama that he
was immersed in as a youth.
~~~ ISOBEL ~~~
Joining DJ Katapila is London-based debutant, Isobel. Spawned from a casual conversation in Kenyatta Market, during Nairobi's first ever record store day, Isobel will be sure to bring a luxurious cocophony of disco vibes to get you in the mood.
We're very happy to welcome him back to the UK!
