Hear from architecture practices UHO, Antonini Darmon Architects, Flores & Prats, Barozzi Veiga at the RIBA.

FRANCE

Laetitia Antonini and Tom Darmon established Antonini + Darmon Architects in Paris in 2006. Their creative system was born from the partnership of two complementary yet different personalities. Antonini + Darmon Architects aim to propose an original architectural interpretation, where each project follows a path having its own identity and dynamics. The practices’ architecture is contextual: functionality, rigor and sobriety are combined in order to transform the project into an object of beauty.

Antonini + Darmon Architects are more especially dedicated to the new architectural and urban stakes involved with sustainable development. The main approach is inspired by the will to create intimate living quarters which interact with the outside world. Antonini + Darmon create buildings and spaces connected to the needs of today’s society, integrating High Environmental Quality (HQE®) into our thought process.

Our diversely talented team puts itself at the service of the project, communicating openly with partners, listening to them and sharing thoughts with them. Antonini Darmon are winners of 40 under 40 (2011) and AJAP (2012).

UHO is an architecture studio led by Adrien Durrmeyer and Max Turnheim. Recognising the possibility of acts of emancipation in abstract space, UHO tries to take on the task of verifying their validity in concrete space. Albeit the risk of naive analogies, it believes in the radical materiality of architecture as an argument for potential modification of the political structure.

Adrien Durrmeyer’s work is heavily infused with a historical perspective on space and focuses on immutability throughout time. He notably participated in events like the CANactions festival in Kiev or the Misunderstandings exhibition co-organized by the FRAC Centre and CAMPO.

Since 2009, Adrien also taught in architecture schools like ÉSA, ÉNSAPM and ÉNSAPVS. Max Turnheim is a Franco-American architect based in Paris. He has co-directed the studios École and UHO. His work focuses mainly on the relationship between architecture and its hosting regime. It ranges from domestic spaces to urban projects. Parallel to his practice, Max has taught in numerous French architecture schools as well as at the Architectural Association.

SPAIN

Flores & Prats is an architecture office based in Barcelona, dedicated to confront theory and academic practice with design and construction activity. The office has worked on reoccupations of old structures, as well as on neighbours' participation in the design process of urban public spaces, and on social housing and its capacity to create community.

Their work has obtained the Grand Award for the Best Work in Architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts in London 2009, the International Award Dedalo Minosse in Vicenza 2011, and the City of Barcelona Award 2016 for the new Sala Beckett International Drama Centre. Their work has also been exhibited at the Venice Biennale 2012, 2014 and 2016.

Eva and Ricardo are design professors at School of Architecture of Barcelona — UPC and have been invited to lead workshops in universities in the United States, Britain, Australia, Italy, Denmark, Mexico, Belgium, Norway and Argentina. In 2015, the Mexican Editorial Arquine published the first monograph on their work, Thought by Hand.

Barozzi Veiga is an architectural office devoted to architecture and urbanism, founded in 2004 in Barcelona by Fabrizio Barozzi and Alberto Veiga.

Barozzi Veiga has won numerous prizes in national and international competitions, among them the refurbishment of the Palace Santa Clara in Úbeda, the Auditorium of Águilas, the Headquarter for the D.O. Ribera del Duero in Roa, the Philharmonic Hall in Szczecin, the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne, the extension of the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Chur, the Music School in Brunico and the Tanzhaus in Zürich.

The work of Barozzi Veiga has been presented in different exhibitions and has been published in a wide range of specialist literature.

Barozzi Veiga has won many international awards and citations for design excellence, among them the Ajac Award 2007 granted by the College of Architects of Barcelona, the International Architecture Award “Barbara Cappochin” 2011, the Gold medal for Italian Architecture 2012 granted by the IV edition of the Triennale Milan, the Young Talent of Italian Architecture 2013 Award granted by the National Council of Architects, Planners and Landscape architects of Italy.

In 2014 the studio was selected to be one of the ten firms in this year’s Design Vanguard by the Architectural Record magazine. Recently the studio has won the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture — Mies van der Rohe Award 2015.
