Church of Sound is very happy to say: Emma-Jean Thackray & her all star band are coming to visit on Friday 13th October! We’ve had our eyes on her for a little while now so it’s a real scoop to get her in. Thackray & the band will be performing 2 sets: the first covering tunes from the Ethio Jazz Songbook, the second consisting of straight originals.

EJT runs a compositional style all of her own. The groove holds it down, situating expansive, freeform abstractions in the spheres of comprehension. Modal melodies weave through the rhythm, riding atop of an ever evolving canopy of sonics. Tones arise reminiscent of Jon Hassell, but imagine if instead of dipping so deep into the new age he started a side project with Autechre. Loops evolve & disintegrate, thoughts slide — am I even here? Where was I five minutes ago & what just happened in between? I wonder what she’s playing for her Songbook set? Read on.

The sound of Ethiopian Jazz, much like that of Emma-Jean Thackray, is distinctive to the ear. Its exact roots are a much contended subject, but it is likely that they lie within the cultural exchanges between East Africa and the wider world sometime through the 50s & 60s. Some hand credit to Nerses Nalbandian, some to Mulatu Astatke, others to Getatchew Mekurya. What is inarguable is the essence of the music, strident modality, knocking rhythm sections & burning organs. Many of you may know the infamous Ethiopiques series, or Mulatu’s collaborative album with London psych jazz outfit The Heliocentrics. Come hear EJT rewrite the rulebook anew for one night only.
