China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is the most ambitious geoeconomic vision in recent history. It promises over $1 trillion in new infrastructure projects, scores of trade agreements, and countless people-to-people ties. Perhaps the boldest dimension of the BRI is its overland routes between China and Europe. New railways aspire to compete with maritime transportation, which has been dominant for centuries. Jonathan Hillman, director of the Reconnecting Asia Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, will put these developments into perspective by examining a few key projects and the challenges they face.
