Haunt invites you to join us again for the revelation of November's artist Eva Lis, with exhibition 'MAPS', as memories of physical places and emotional experience.
Of the many men whom I am, whom we are…
I shall speak, not of self, but of geography
«We Are Many» Pablo Neruda
We make maps to understand the world around us, maps of the sky, maps of the lands and the oceans. Maps are memories of places that show us the way back there or instruct those that wish to follow how to get there. They link the past with the future. But the infinite nature of our Universe makes it impossible to capture all of the complexity found in the real world, so maps are always symbolic, abstract, incomplete.
I used old maps describing physical places to record my feelings. I hugged, stroked, ripped apart and put together pieces of old maps while in a different states of emotion: anger, joy, sadness, despair, hope… creating creases and marks: records of those feelings in that moment.
Each line, each mark is unique and unrepeatable. It marks a unique moment of time, feeling and space.
Like a clairvoyant we look at maps, fingerprints, stars in the sky, hoping to navigate through the future, learning from the past. Our imagination travels through those ethereal landscapes in pursuit of connection, affiliation, knowledge of who we are.
