Raving is the modern version of the ecstatic celebrations that can be found in many cultures. The combination of communal dance, costume and psychedelic drugs echoes many rituals both ancient and modern.

This talk will explore the similarities between all-night raving with Ecstasy and the Native American Church's Peyote ceremony and the traditional shamanism of the Huichol people in Mexico. Discover how our ancestors created spectacular light shows and repetitive beats before lasers and electronic music were invented! Julian Vayne, author of the celebrated 'Getting Higher: The Manual of Psychedelic Ceremony' is an entheogenic ritual practitioner and will be sharing examples of archaic and modern techniques used in communal psychedelic ritual and how these are reflected in festival, clubland and free parties. He will argue that the rave culture serves an essential human need, one that was last officially part of European society in the Rites of Eleusis in ancient Greece. Raving can be more than just a great night out, it is an attempt to find initiation, community and liberation even in the face of prohibition and repression.
