Farm animals suffer in their billions. Every year alone, nearly a billion animals in the UK are slaughtered for food. Laying hens, producing eggs, are slaughtered after a year of production and around a half of the 36 million or so hens in the UK are in enriched cages. Cages limit behaviour expression in birds and do not provide a life worth living for these sensitive, inquisitive birds.
Through our campaign work, we reach out to major food companies to ask them put a policy in place to stop the sale of eggs from caged systems. These companies include multinationals like Tesco and Kraft Heinz. We aim to work through positive engagement, however, where this isn’t possible we conduct hard-hitting campaigns to highlight companies that continue to use eggs from caged hens. We have got over 50 brands to make cage-free commitments in the UK to date. While laying hens suffer in cages over a prolonged period, a fellow poultry bird, the broiler chicken has been bred to grow so fast that it can barely walk. Broiler chickens make up the vast majority of animals slaughtered every year. Over 950 million in the UK are slaughtered every year. They live cramped lives in dirty barns with barely enough space to lie comfortably. Their legs hurt because they grow at such speed they can’t support their body’s weight and they suffer heart attacks and other diseases as a consequence.
In the US, The Humane League, has been working in 2017 on a broiler welfare campaign and has over 20 companies to date with commitments to change the breed, space and enrichment given to broilers. In Europe, the major farm animal protection organisations have come together and developed a minimum standard for broilers similar to the US ask. We will be working on this campaign in the coming year, so that we can see the same shift in improved standards for broilers as we have for laying hens. Welfare campaigns are so important. We live in a world where the use of animals is so ubiquitous and we are not at a stage where we can work with companies to stop the entire sale of animal products. Meanwhile animals are suffering every minute of every day in horrific conditions. Our work is so important to reducing that suffering. Cages are the ultimate symbol of cruelty. Broiler chickens are trapped in the cage of their oversized body. If we can work to improve these conditions we must and we must act now.
