Sentient and intelligent beings are denied even their most basic needs and suffer immensely in horrific conditions. Animals are suffering on an unprecedented scale, and the situation is getting worse; according to the United Nations, global meat production is projected to increase by nearly 360 million tons by 2050.

Katie is a “broiler chicken” – a type of chicken that has been bred to gain weight very quickly. She has reached the weight ready for slaughter in half the time of a traditional meat chicken. This rate of growth leaves many birds like Katie crippled by their own weight. After travelling from the hatchery at one day old, she spent the rest of her life in a shed with 20 000 other birds. The birds have had to live in their own filth, which will not be cleaned out until after their deaths. At only 42 days old, she about to be sent off for slaughter. If she’s lucky, the electrified pool at the slaughterhouse will stun her, or else she will still be conscious as she has her throat slit. Katie’s tragic story is common. In 2017, there are an estimated 31 billion land vertebrate animals being farmed worldwide. Of these, 22 billion are in factory farmed conditions.

But the problem goes beyond animal suffering. The UN noted in 2006 that the livestock sector caused a higher proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions than transport. They see it as a major cause “of the world's most pressing environmental problems, including global warming, land degradation, air and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity.” Meat is also bad for our health, increasing the risk of heart disease, strokes, cancer and more. Furthermore, it is an inherently inefficient system, and contributes to world hunger and food injustice.

The current food system is in a dire state, and its consequences are unimaginably far-reaching. Change, however, is possible. And you can help. In a world where we have limited time and resources, we need to make sure that our actions are as effective as they can be to achieve this goal. Some people will dedicate their careers to working directly for animal advocacy non-profits. Others might be the technological innovators who help to bring sweeping change to animal agriculture. Others will be the hard-working earners who donate their money to fund these advocacy and research efforts. The ways to “do your bit” are many, but two things are certain: the meat revolution is needed urgently – and you can help.
