In ancient times people thought that sleep is some form of death. A short and reversible death where that the brain shuts down when we fall a sleep and turns back on only when we wake up.
Today it is well known that the brain keeps on being active even when we are asleep. What can our brain do while we are sleeping? Can we be conscious and asleep at the same time? How sleep shapes our memories and how learning modulate sleep? can we learn entirely new information during sleep? and how is it all related to our sense of smell?
In this talk, Anat will discuss the relationship between sleep, learning and memory and the unique role of the sense of smell in this process.
Dr Anat Arzi is a research fellow at the Consciousness and Cognition Lab at the University of Cambridge. She completed her PhD in the Department of Neurobiology at the Weizmann Institute of Science on olfactory processing, learning and memory of consciously unperceived odours, particularly during sleep. Her current research investigates how the human brain process information in the absence of conscious awareness in different states of consciousness as sleep, sedation and disorders of consciousness.
