DIY Space for London
96-108 Ormside Street, SE15 1TF London, United Kingdom
It's cold in Calais — really cold. Mixed with the fact that people are having their shelter and sleeping bags taken from them at least once a week means that donations of warm clothes, cash and bedding are even more important.
To help we're putting on a threefold event at the DIY Space for London:
A crate building workshop — 12pm (free)
Fire at Sea Screening — 5pm (£5)
Weddings/th'sheridans/Mat Riviere/Whitelands — 8pm (£7 // £10 with film screening)
DJs -11.30pm -> 2
There will also be tasty vegan treats throughout the day provided by Lil Kimchi!
(carers free/no-one turned away for lack of funds — contact us for info)
— 12pm-5pm CRATE BUILDING WORKSHOP (free — suggested donation of 2x gloves, socks, shoes etc)
There is a lovely crate made out of pallets which lives in the DIY Space. It's for donations of clothes, shoes and bedding and is emptied and taken to Calais every few weeks. We're hoping to build 4 more of these to place in a few new locations around South London to make it easier to donate supplies! Do you like woodwork, painting, being creative or smashing things apart? This is absolutely for you. Join us for a drink, some music and help us build some more beautiful crate to make it easier for people to donate things to the Help Refugees warehouse in Calais! You don't need to bring any supplies — we'll provide everything! (but if you have hammers/saws/paintbrushes bring 'em down!)
We'll also be collecting donations all day, so feel free to pop down with clothes, boots or bedding at any point and say hi!
5pm-7.30pm FIRE AT SEA SCREENING (£5)
Winner of the Golden Bear for Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival 2016, Gianfranco Rosi's incisive, poignant and deeply moving portrait of the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa--and the humanitarian crisis occurring in the seas around it--is both a masterly work of documentary filmmaking and a timely call for urgent action.
8pm-2am BANDS & DJS (£7)
Formed for the First Timers 2017 festival Whitelands have had a line-up change or two but after a few successful (and part improvised) shows at the DIY Space they are growing into an ace fuzz rock outfit. See you in the pit.
Flitting between mournful vocoder dirges and shouted solipsistic choruses Mat Riviere blends a variety of textures into his bizarrely catchy pop. The songs twist beautiful hooks into uncanny shapes layered under and over click drums, synths, field recordings and samples resulting in sad, cathartic yet amazing tunes.
th'sheridans go for the classic bedroom lo-fi blend of guitar and drum machine with lyrics about everyday life but each song is put together with such joy, humour and enthusiasm they totally blow yr standard bedroom bands out of the water.
Bringing back that 00's indie rock vibe Weddings' jubilant freak outs and off kilter drums get even the most steadfast feet dancing. Buzzing from their Inside Shapes EP on Barely Regal Records they're sure to put on a banger!
— Help Refugees is the leading UK NGO in a new movement of humanitarian aid. Acting where governmental and other non-governmental bodies are unable to, we are working to fill the huge and terrifying gaps in services for displaced people in Europe and beyond. With no bureaucracy and minimal overheads, every pound we raise can be traced to its tangible impact on the ground.
In just two years, Help Refugees has grown from a small group of friends into an internationally respected NGO in the refugee sector. Below are some of the awards and testimonials we have had for our work thus far.
