The Last Tuesday Society invites you to join us on Tuesday 13th March for a look at the Cultural History of Absinthe with author Phil Baker.

Beginning with the 1905 Absinthe Murders, Phil Baker's book offers a cultural history of absinthe, from its modest origins as a herbal tonic through its luxuriantly morbid heyday in the late nineteenth century. Along with a number of fascinating but little known characters, who often died young, the absinthe scrapbook contains Verlaine, Rimbaud, Baudelaire, Oscar Wilde, Ernest Dowson, Aleister Crowley, Arthur Machen, Strindberg, Alfred Jarry, Van Gogh, Toulouse- Lautrec, Alphonse Allais, Ernest Hemingway and Picasso.

The Last Tuesday Society's full menu of this infamous green spirit will be available on the night.

Phil Baker is a writer and reformed absinthe drinker based in London. As well as absinthe, he has written books on Austin Osman Spare, William S Burroughs, Dennis Wheatley and Samuel Beckett, and more recently co-edited Lord of Strange Deaths: The Fiendish World of Sax Rohmer.
