Installation — Ashes57 'Ghosts'

Ghosts; an installation by Ashes57.
This immersive video installation invites the audience into a circle of ghost dancers with projections on diverse materials and sound tracked with musicby DJ Rashad. The visual experience mirrors the speed and hypnotic effect of footwork music as images of dancers break down to the point of abstraction. The title of the piece invokes one of the foundational footwork dance moves as well as the classic DJ Rashad track. The setting for the work is the main room of Corsica Studios, the place whereAshes57 and DJ Rashad first met in 2010.

DJ Taye
A generation younger than the founders of the Teklife crew, DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn, DJ Taye was originally a rapper and beat maker before hooking up with the collective and jumping headfirst into the world of footwork production, dancing and DJing.

100% committed to pushing further the potential of the footwork template; Taye's new album on Hyperdub «Still Trippin” is ambitious in its range and scope. Taking two years to formulate, the record broadens the possibilities of the sound, forcing it to adapt to songwriting, and also revives Taye’s talent for MCing and producing beats to which
he can rap and sing. Furthermore Taye definitely ups the ante with his complex and precise drum programming, never losing sight of footwork’s ability to confound.

DJ Paypal is a member of Chicago Footwork crew Teklife, and has released music with independent labels LuckyMe, Hyperdub, and most recently, Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint. Alongside other members from inside and outside the Chicago homebase, Paypal is working towards spreading the sounds of Chicago, and the expansion on the sound by Teklife, throughout the world. He is also the founder of label and crew Mall Music Inc., organizing releases together with cohorts DJ Mastercard, DJ Orange Julius, and others. Spending most of his time in the studio, often with peers, the breathe of Paypal’s musical practice comes from supporting, working with, and combining experiments with a shared lens. Live, ain’t no party like a Teklife Party.

DJ Haram is a queer producer and DJ originally from New Jersey, currently based in Philadelphia. Stylistically versatile, she throws down for Jersey, Philly, and Baltimore with club and booty bounce sets but also has been known to pay homage to her roots in the tradition of Middle Eastern dance music and of DIY noise and experimental sound. In Philly, Haram curates a few nights; a legal fundraiser party series (f)LAWLESS, a monthly live/DIY hip hop night ‘Gas’, and a monthly radio program RAGE RADIO on 91.7FM. Her recent tour highlight performances include Unsound Dislocation Cruise Krakow, De School Amsterdam, Creamcake Berlin, Razzmatazz Barcelona, Paradox Baltimore, GHE2OG0TH1K New York City, Club Chai Oakland, Drake Hotel Toronto, Ableton Loop, and Vice Arabia.

Nazar is an Angolan producer who explores the rawness and the extreme violence of the 27-year Angolan civil war. Angola is known musically for its Kuduro – a genre that is often used in a way that distracts from the dark and violent history of the country, with upbeat melodies and party lyrics. Nazar inverts this formula, injecting war sounds like guns cocking and airstrikes, as well as singing on his tracks with lyrics focused on the massacres and violence that took place during this violent period. Nazar calls this 'rough kuduro'- a term he coined through a hashtag on his soundcloud page. His soon-to-be-over NIHIL series are a prime example of the concepts in his work. It’s Nazar’s tongue-in-cheek ode to the reigning kleptocracy—a tribute to the government that cracks down murderously on dissent, adorning its public spaces with pro-government propaganda.

Ashes57 is an illustrator, painter, photographer and videographer whose work has provided some of the most iconic images of the underground bass music scene from the early days of dubstep through to footwork and beyond. A distinctive visual style links her illustration, painting and print work — images which are dense and detailed with fine and intricate lines. Her complex cityscapes, rendered in a largely monochromatic palette with an occasional burst of colour, are playgrounds for a revolving cast of DJs, musicians and revellers. From the flyers and posters she produced for the legendary parties in New York to record covers for labels including TEKLIFE, DMZ, SWAMP 81 and HYPERDUB, her illustrations, design work and photography have provided the visual foil to many of the most exciting moments in electronic music of recent years.
