Consumptive Chic: A History of Beauty, Fashion and Disease
Thursday 7 June | 6-8pm

Consumptive Chic is the surprising story of how beauty and tuberculosis were intertwined during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In this talk, author Carolyn A. Day explores the contemporary social trends and advice given at the time in medical writing, literature and personal papers uncovering the intimate relationship between fashionable women’s clothing and medical understanding of the illness.

The disease was seen to confer beauty on the sufferer and consumption become both idealized and feminized. It became a positive affliction, one to be emulated on both beauty practices and dress.

The event starts at 6pm with a glass of wine in the Museum foyer and opportunity to view the current exhibition. The talk follows at 6.15pm for 6.20pm in the Fashion Studio and lasts for approximately one hour including an opportunity to ask questions, followed by a book signing in the foyer. Ticket includes admission to the exhibition and guests are welcome to view this before or after the talk.

£15 / £12 students. All tickets include a complimentary drink and exhibition entry.
