Tuesdays 12 June — 17 July, 18:30 — 20:30
This six-week course explores the different strategies developed by photographers and artists for making work. We will be introducing a visual methodology every week by looking at the research processes of practitioners such as Walid Raad, John Baldessari, Marcel Broodthaers, Sophie Calle, Simon Starling, Gerhard Richter, Cindy Sherman and Wolfgang Tillmanns.
Course elements will include interdisciplinary approaches to photography as a research tool, including montage theory, archival and installation strategies, performative and written approaches, as well as thinking about authorship and what it means to participate in a piece of work.
Assuming the position that ev...ery practice has its theory and vice versa, participants will not only engage in readings and discussion but also undertake workshop-led elements, putting these varied ideas into practice.
The course is aimed not only at photographers but also at people with an interest in photography as an research practice, willing to experiment with thinking about photographic production as an artistic process.
Wiebke Leister is an artist and researcher. She is course leader for MA Photography at London College of Communication, and exhibits and publishes her work internationally.
