Will weaponised A.I and killer robots leave our world in ruin? An expert in this field, Professor John Bishop will give his take on the challenges facing humanity right now. From automated missile defence systems to why The Terminator may never actually exist, come learn this and more.

In 2014, the late Professor Stephen Hawking stated “Once humans develop artificial intelligence it would take off on its own and redesign itself at an ever increasing rate. Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete, and would be superseded.”

It is not often that a much-loved international genius is proclaimed wrong, but Prof. Mark Bishop believes Hawking's claims are overestimated. Much like Schrödinger’s cat, he believes Hawking was wrong and right, at the same time.

Wrong, because there are strong grounds for believing that computers will never be able to replicate all human cognitive faculties. Right, because relatively simple machines could still pose a threat to humanity’s future existence; an existential threat, so to speak.

For this reason, the International Committee for Robot Arms Control travel to Geneva every year to participate in multilateral meetings on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (L.A.W.S.); a debate that continues to this day at the very highest levels of the UN. Professor Bishop is part of this committee.

While we are a long way away from an all encompassing violent AI overlord, the threat of Robotic & AI weapons is very real.
